Journal of bondage-chICK (4932) A young woman best described as livejournal user manque started using the free journal service over at perl.org to ruminate out loud about her life. On LJ, she would have enjoyed the privacy of the mall, but on perl.org, she stuck out so dramatically that the perl hackers accused her of being a bot. (As a friend of mine said, the goal of any true programmer is to fail the Turing test…)

How Much is Inside Goldschlager? Goldschlager is my favorite novelty booze. It is a clear cinnamon liqueur, swirling with hundreds of tiny flakes of real gold. Yes! Real gold, inside the bottle, mixed up, ready to flow into your stomach, small intestines and other digestion-related organs.

Reason columnist Cathy Young tears THK a new piehole. In it she recounts the tale of THK and the reporter who wouldn't let go. The defense from the left has been that, hey, the veep said GFY. Or that the reporter just couldn't stand a "Strong African American Woman" who shared her opinions. Granted, Cheney's remark was much more vulgar than THK's "shove it." But I'll expect her defenders to grant the she was wrong - she was asked to discuss something she had said (on tape), and she lied about having said it. When the reporter called her out on it, she lost her temper rather than owning her mistake. When Cheney was called out for his vulgarity, he owned it. It would be politically prudent for THK to avoid the impression that she thinks here wealth exempts her from accountability for her ideas.

Metacrap - Putting the torch to seven straw men of the meta-utopia by Cory Doctorow

Silflay Hraka: Place Your Bets: "Two articles published this month in the Journal of Economic Perspectives suggest that betting markets can out-forecast the polls. In one, Paul Rhode and Koleman Strumpf* of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, relate that from 1884 to 1940, when election wagering was wildly popular, the betting favorite won in every year but 1916, when Woodrow Wilson beat Charles Evans Hughes with a last-minute upset in California. After 1940, because polls were perceived as more scientific, the gambling markets faded from public consciousness, says Strumpf. "
